The Art of Design

The art of design involves creating a plan or specification for the construction of an object, system, activity, or process by incorporating aesthetic principles to enhance functionality and appearance. Design focuses on arranging elements to achieve a particular purpose effectively and often involves problem-solving and creativity to produce visually appealing and practical outcomes. Design is distinguished from art as it aims to solve specific problems and meet practical needs, whereas art is more concerned with personal expression and evoking emotions. The principles of art and design, such as balance, contrast, emphasis, movement, pattern, rhythm, and unity or variety, are integral to the design process to ensure both functionality and aesthetic appeal. Greetings! I'm Kok Cheow Yeoh, an Associate Professor of Fine Arts and Head of Graphic Design at Indiana University Southeast. Slyck.design serves as an extension of my active yet outdated website, yeoh.com. I aim to enrich this platform with current events, ideas, explorations, and discussions. Thank you for visiting, and I look forward to your return!

Evening market in Hong Kong

Well done, Ray!

April 22, 2024 - One of our graphic design students, Mr. Ray Kimball, through our internship program, has earned a challenge coin from the Mayor of the city of Charlestown, Indiana, for his various branding projects for the city. Mr. Kimball has connected our program with a local community to make a difference, and for that, I’m grateful and very proud of him. Photo source: City of Charlestown FB

Research

I'm currently in the initial phase of crafting a research paper about the establishment of Slyck, a marketplace and gallery located in downtown New Albany, Indiana. slyck was officially launched on October 6, 2023, as a sabbatical project that concluded on March 15, 2024. This space has emerged as a vibrant hub where students, alumni, and local artists can explore their creativity freely. The aim is to shed light on slyck's significant role in nurturing artistic expression, promoting community involvement, and reflecting on the lessons learned in operating a retail business.

My most recent poster design

Responding to an invitation to submit a poster for the Ba Culture International Poster Exhibition in China, this poster, created by Nov. 2023, features a large three-dimensional 'ba' Chinese character emerging from the ground, with the English letters 'BA' embedded within it. The 'ba' character is smooth and pristine, creating a striking contrast with its rugged surroundings. Numerous artifacts unearthed from an archaeological site line the character's outer periphery, while others rise toward the sky, illuminating the existence of a sophisticated civilization that thrived from the 2nd millennium BCE to the 3rd century.
